Clothing

There are many different types of outdoor clothing and this brief guide details the main sorts available. It's important that whatever clothing you choose is appropriate for the type of outdoor activity and the weather. Walking clothing is often ideal for most outdoor activities.

Most outer gear such as jackets and over trousers are made of Gore-Tex or similar and this makes the clothes breathable as well as fully waterproof. Lighter jackets tend to be fleece or similar and are often wind-proof, making them ideal for spring or autumn hiking. Hats are essential for preventing heat loss through the head, as well as helping to keep ears warm. Gloves are also essential for colder weather or high winds. Several thin layers are better than one thick layer underneath your jacket as warm air will stay trapped between them. Next to the skin, synthetic fabric can be better than natural as it will remove moisture, or wick, from your skin.

Many types of walking trousers offer wind protection and are solar dry or quick dry, meaning they dry off quickly after getting wet. These types of trousers also keep humidity away from the skin and some may offer UPF sun protection. Walking trousers that convert into shorts are ideal for responding quickly to increasing temperatures. Over trousers are great walking clothing for winter hikes as they offer protection against heavy wind and rain and gaiters are great for preventing mud splashes on trousers. Whatever outdoor clothing you choose, it should always be appropriate for your outdoor activities.
