Sleeping Mats

If you are considering a sleeping mat for under your sleeping bag, depending upon the conditions you wish to camp in, the choices are closed cell mats, open cell mats and a self inflating sleeping mat. Closed cell camping mats are generally less bulky and easier to transport, they are also somwhat cheaper than the other options. This type of mat is normally less comfortable, but is better at preventing body heat loss through the ground. They tend to be a good option for cold weather camping too as lower air flow means it won't draw in cold air or dampness. Open cell camping mats provide more comfort as gaps between the cells allow for air bubbles to cushion the body well. These are more suited to summer camping and are also better options for "base camp" arrangements or if you plan to use your car to travel between sites as they do tend to be a bit more bulky. Finally, a self inflating camping mat will have a lined interior with foam chambers, allowing for tight rolling and packing. Opening a valve fills the pad with air due to the expansion of foam drawing in air. They tend to be a popular choice in the backpacking community as they pack well and provide a good level of comfort. They provide better durability, comfort and don't get damp or wet. The downsides are generally if not cared for well they can leak and they can be a bit more expensive than other mats.
